What this test is

This test measures specific IgE antibodies in the blood that react to proteins found in black tea. It is used to help evaluate whether a person's symptoms may be related to an allergy to black tea.

What it measures

  • Specific IgE to black tea — Reflects the level of allergic antibodies directed against black tea proteins.
  • Total IgE (if included) — May provide a general measure of allergic tendency, though it is not specific to black tea.

What the test involves

A healthcare professional collects a small blood sample, usually from a vein in your arm. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Why it is often ordered

A clinician may order this test when a person reports symptoms such as hives, itching, or digestive upset after drinking black tea. It is typically used alongside a medical history and other evaluations to help assess possible triggers.

Preparation

No special preparation is usually required, but follow the collection lab's instructions. They will tell you if any medications or foods should be avoided before the draw.

How results are reported

Results are reported as a numeric level of specific IgE antibodies, often with a qualitative interpretation such as negative or positive. Reference ranges and reporting formats vary by laboratory, so your clinician will interpret your results in context.

Before you go

  • Whether any medications or foods should be avoided before the blood draw
  • How and when you will receive your test results
  • Whether additional tests are needed to confirm or rule out an allergy
