What this test is

An avocado and berry allergy test is a specific IgE antibody blood test. It measures immune proteins associated with allergic responses to avocado and berry allergens. Results are interpreted by a clinician alongside symptoms and history.

What it measures

  • Avocado-specific IgE — reflects immune sensitization to avocado proteins
  • Berry-specific IgE — reflects immune sensitization to berry proteins
  • Total IgE — overall allergic antibody level, sometimes included in allergy panels

What the test involves

A sample is collected with a standard blood draw from a vein, usually in the arm. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Why it is often ordered

A clinician may order this test when someone reports reactions after eating avocado or berries, such as itching, hives, or digestive symptoms. It is used as part of a broader allergy evaluation, not as a stand-alone diagnosis.

Preparation

Preparation is usually minimal, but instructions can vary by collection site. Follow the lab's or collection facility's specific instructions before your appointment.

How results are reported

Results are reported as antibody levels for each allergen tested, with the lab's own reference ranges. Reference ranges vary by laboratory, so results should be discussed with the ordering clinician.

Before you go

  • Whether fasting or medication changes are needed
  • The specific allergens included in the panel
  • How and when results will be shared
