What this test is
The Total T4 test measures the total amount of thyroxine, a thyroid hormone, in the bloodstream. This includes both the free thyroxine that is active and the portion bound to proteins. It provides a broad look at thyroid hormone production.
What it measures
- Total T4 — Reflects the total amount of thyroxine in the blood, including bound and free forms.
- Free T4 (if included) — Reflects the unbound, active portion of thyroxine available to tissues.
- Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) (if included) — Reflects pituitary signaling to the thyroid and helps interpret T4 levels.
What the test involves
The test requires a standard blood draw, usually from a vein in your arm. A small amount of blood is collected into a tube and sent to a laboratory for analysis.
Why it is often ordered
A clinician may order a Total T4 test to help evaluate thyroid function when symptoms suggest an overactive or underactive thyroid. It is often part of a panel that includes other thyroid tests to give a clearer picture.
Preparation
