What this test is

A liver function test is a group of blood tests that assess the health and function of your liver. It measures levels of enzymes, proteins, and other substances that can indicate liver damage or disease.

What it measures

  • Albumin — a protein made by the liver that reflects liver function and nutritional status
  • Total Protein — measures the total amount of proteins in the blood, including albumin and globulins
  • ALP (Alkaline Phosphatase) — an enzyme found in the liver, bile ducts, and bone
  • ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase) — an enzyme primarily found in the liver that can indicate liver damage
  • AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase) — an enzyme found in the liver and other tissues that can indicate liver damage
  • Bilirubin — a yellow pigment produced from the breakdown of red blood cells that is processed by the liver

The test requires a standard blood draw from a vein in your arm. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis.
