What this test is

The horsefly allergy test measures specific IgE antibodies in your blood that may be produced in response to horsefly allergens. It is used to evaluate whether your immune system has become sensitized to horsefly proteins.

What it measures

  • Horsefly-specific IgE — Reflects the level of allergic antibody directed against horsefly proteins.

What the test involves

A healthcare professional collects a small blood sample, usually from a vein in your arm. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Why it is often ordered

A clinician may order this test if you have had allergic symptoms after a horsefly bite, such as swelling, hives, or difficulty breathing. It can help determine whether those symptoms are related to a horsefly allergy.

Preparation

No special preparation is typically required, but follow the collection lab's instructions. Tell the lab about any medications you take, as some may affect test results.

How results are reported

Results are reported as a numeric level of specific IgE, along with a qualitative interpretation such as negative, low, or high. Reference ranges vary by laboratory, so your results should be interpreted in the context of the lab's own ranges and your symptoms.

Before you go

  • Whether any medications you take could affect the test
  • How long results typically take at that lab
  • Whether a referral or order is needed before the blood draw
