What this test is

This test measures specific IgE antibodies in the blood that are associated with an allergic response to lamb or mutton. It is a type of allergy blood test, often used alongside a clinical history to help identify food allergies. The test does not diagnose an allergy on its own; results are interpreted by a clinician.

What it measures

  • Lamb-specific IgE — Reflects the level of antibodies that may be associated with an allergic response to lamb or mutton.

What the test involves

A standard blood draw is performed, usually from a vein in the arm. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Why it is often ordered

A clinician may order this test when a person reports symptoms such as hives, swelling, digestive upset, or breathing difficulty after eating lamb or mutton. It can help determine whether an allergy to these meats is likely and guide further evaluation.

Preparation

Preparation is generally minimal, but you should follow the instructions provided by the collection lab. This may include avoiding certain medications or fasting, depending on the lab's protocol.

How results are reported

Results are typically reported as a numerical value that indicates the level of specific IgE antibodies, along with a reference range. Reference ranges vary by laboratory, so results should always be interpreted in the context of the lab's own ranges and your clinical history.

Before you go

  • Whether any medications should be avoided before the test
  • If fasting is required for your specific test
  • How and when results will be shared with you
