A Lupus Panel typically combines several blood tests, such as an antinuclear antibody (ANA) test and other autoantibody or inflammation markers. It is used to look for patterns that may be associated with lupus or other connective tissue diseases. The exact set of tests can vary by laboratory and by the ordering clinician.

What it measures

  • Antinuclear antibody (ANA) — a general marker of autoimmune activity
  • Anti-double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) — an antibody sometimes associated with lupus
  • Anti-Smith (anti-Sm) antibody — an antibody that may support a lupus evaluation
  • Complement proteins (C3, C4) — proteins that can be low when immune complexes are active
  • C-reactive protein (CRP) — a general marker of inflammation
  • Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) — another general marker of inflammation
  • Complete blood count (CBC) — checks blood cell counts that can be affected in autoimmune conditions

What the test involves

The panel is usually collected through a standard blood draw from a vein in the arm. In some cases, a urine sample may also be requested to check for kidney involvement.

Why it is often ordered

A clinician may order a Lupus Panel when a person has symptoms that could suggest an autoimmune condition, such as joint pain, skin rashes, or unexplained fatigue. It is also sometimes used to monitor known autoimmune disease over time.
