This test looks for ribonucleic acid (RNA) from HIV in a blood sample. Because it detects the virus itself rather than the body's immune response, it can show a positive result sooner after exposure than standard antibody tests. It is sometimes called a viral load test when used to monitor known infection.

  • Viral load — the number of copies of HIV RNA per milliliter of blood, when quantified
